Remarkable Experience
The qipao also known as the cheongsam is an iconic Chinese garment that blends tradition with modern elegance. Originally worn by Manchu women during the Qing dynasty, the qipao evolved from a practical robe with narrow cuts for mobility into a refined symbol of Chinese femininity.
In the 1920s, modern adaptations emerged: skirts shortened to the calf, sleeves cropped to the elbow, and simple edging replaced elaborate details. By the 1930s, the qipao had become everyday wear for women across social classes, influenced by Western aesthetics favoring slender silhouettes. High slits and sleek tailoring made it a fashionable choice, especially in Shanghai China’s fashion capital where film stars and calendar girls helped popularize its stylish image.
Though it declined in popularity in mainland China after the 1949 revolution, the qipao remained culturally significant in Hong Kong as school uniforms, restaurant attire, wedding dresses, and national costumes. Today, it is recognized globally as a timeless representation of Chinese identity. From red carpets to diplomatic events, the qipao is still chosen to express grace, tradition, and pride.
The tour takes the form of a walking exploration of Macao’s World Heritage sites, covering areas such as the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Monte Fortress, St. Anthony’s Church, and Rua dos Ervanários. Through expert commentary, participants can fully immerse themselves in the unique charm and profound heritage of Macao’s Historic Centre.
The Macao pedicab a three-wheeled, bicycle-based carriage is more than just a mode of transport. Introduced in 1948, this vehicle once ruled Macao’s streets, replacing the traditional pulled rickshaws. At its peak, over 700 pedicabs operated across nearly 100 local stops, forming a vibrant network of urban mobility. The Macao Pedicab Drivers Union was founded in 1952, registering over a thousand drivers.
Today, the pedicab has been reborn as a nostalgic and charming way to tour the historic city. As visitors ride along the shaded lakeshores of Nam Van and Sai Van, they are greeted by cool breezes, scenic views, and stories from friendly drivers who are happy to take commemorative photos.
The gentle pace, the rhythmic pedaling, and the cultural atmosphere combine into an experience that transports you to a simpler time.
